A subpoena is a court order directing your appearance at the time and place stated. Once you have been subpoenaed you are required to appear as ordered until excused. Failure to appear may be regarded by the court as contempt. If you fail to appear, a warrant may be issued for your arrest.
However, before appearing in Court, you should contact the Assistant District Attorney noted on your subpoena to determine whether your appearance is necessary. In most cases, the subpoena will advise you to call the Assistant District Attorney BEFORE appearing. In most cases, the Assistant District Attorney will call you to personally notify you that your appearance is necessary in Court.
You should ALWAYS contact the District Attorney’s Office if:
* you have any questions about the case;
* you move or change phone numbers;
* you are contacted by the defendant or anyone other than the police
